Course Information
The boundaries between Physics and other sciences are neither rigid nor fixed, and knowledge of Physics is required in many other disciplines. For example, a great deal of medicine involves an understanding of Physics as well as Human Biology.
Physics is often thought of as the “hardest” of the three science subjects and is certainly the most mathematical but it is a great choice to study new technologies and the world in which we live.
What Will I Learn?
In the first year AS Level course you will cover:
Mechanics (forces, motion and energy) • Electrons and photons and particles • Materials • Waves • Lasers • Radiation from stars • Quantum phenomena • Superconductivity • Experimental skills
The second year (A2) builds upon material studied at AS level and includes;
Gravitational, Electric and Magnetic fields • Further mechanics (circular motion and simple harmonic motion) • Thermodynamics • Nuclear physics • Astronomy and Cosmology • Options (a.c. theory, medical physics, physics of sport, environmental physics)
Entry Requirements
You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English/Welsh Language at B grade, Maths at grade B plus Double Award Science at BB or above, or GCSE Physics (Higher Tier) at grade B.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Career Progression
- On successful completion of this course many learners apply to and are offered places at university to study courses such as Physics and Engineering. It is acceptable or desirable for many other degree courses such as Optometry, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Computer Science and Mathematics. A number of learners go into employment or move onto an apprenticeship programme.
