For those with an interest in catwalk fashion, current design trends and costume for theatre or screen, this is the course for you! You will be introduced to an exciting range of skills and design processes in fashion and costume design and construction, allowing you to progress in a creative pathway within this sector. We provide a supportive environment, with industry standard facilities and equipment to enable you to develop and explore your creativity. Guided by passionate and highly skilled staff, you will study a broad range of projects aimed at developing your design skills, visual awareness, research and contextual understanding, including fashion design, pattern cutting, applied textiles, and costume construction.
The practical work is supported by critical and contextual awareness of Art and Design, enabling you to understand the place of fashion and costume, within a historical and contemporary context. You will be encouraged to immerse yourself in exciting visits to museums, galleries, theatre and cinema. This course is equivalent to three AS levels.
What Will I Learn?
The course builds an exciting portfolio of work through a wide range of projects that guide you through the design process from inspiration and concept, design, experimentation and construction. You will develop creative and technical skills working both two dimensionally and three dimensionally, exploring mood board creation, trend analysis, observational drawing, understanding of colour, visual communication of ideas through fashion illustration, all supported by research of contemporary and historical sources. Design interpretation will be through making, you will develop skills in textiles, experimental pattern cutting, garment construction processes, fashion styling, working to a brief with a specified client, and understanding costume ideas for production performance and character.
With dedicated teaching and support staff you will work through set briefs to complete units, with access to specialist studios, industrial sewing machines, print room, dye room and IT suite.
The units covered are: Unit 1 Introduction to visual language in art and design Unit 2 Introduction to research skills in art and design Unit 3 Introduction to critical and contextual awareness in art and design Unit 4 Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art and design Unit 5 An integrated approach to 2D problem solving in art and design Unit 6 An integrated approach to 3D problem solving in art and design Unit 7 An integrated approach to time-based problem solving Unit 8 Developing an art and design project Unit 9 Opportunities for progression in art and design
On completion of the course you will have the relevant skills, understanding and knowledge to confidently progress further within fashion and costume, having gained an excellent grounding in this creative area.
5 GCSEs at grades A*- C including English/Welsh, Maths/Numeracy and Art and Design/Textile Design, or an equivalent Level 2 Diploma at merit grade or above in a creative related subject.
You will be invited to attend an interview and present a portfolio of your art and design work. You will also be required to undertake an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.
There is continuous assessment throughout the course for practical and written assignments, through presentation of portfolio work. All units are internally assessed and externally moderated. On successful completion of this qualification you will receive an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction, converting into UCAS points supporting aspirations to progress to the Extended Diploma and future application in to Higher Education.

- On successful completion of this course you will progress onto the second year of the Extended Diploma in Fashion and Costume. Following completion of the two year Extended Diploma, you will have the opportunity to apply to Higher Education courses, including the BA Costume Construction for Screen and Stage at Coleg y Cymoedd, apprenticeships or find regional employment opportunities in a growing creative sector in Wales.
