Foundation Degree Information Communication Technology

The Foundation Degree ICT is a higher-level computer qualification (level 4/5) certified by USW. You are technically a student of USW but attend classes in college. Upon completion of the course you can move straight into work in the IT industry. Most of our learners do. You can if you wish top up to a full degree. The Foundation degree ICT is a complete qualification in its own right with USW certification and cap and gown graduation ceremony. The subjects studied on the course give broad coverage of key computer knowledge and skills that employers are looking for. Ranging from responsive web development to computer programming (More details below). Mode of study: 2 Days in college a week year 1 and 2 days a week in year 2. You will also complete a work experience element in year 2


For full-time students, the course comprises 120 credits at Level 4 in the first year, and 120 credits at Level 5 in the second. At Level 4, the Foundation Degree ICT provides a broad foundation of core computing and develops skills in software development, web development, systems analysis, computer systems and networking and problem solving. At Level 5 most of those themes are developed further. You will develop virtual reality environments and games in Virtual Reality Development unit. Students will develop professional skills in software development, systems analysis, computer systems, systems security, and strategic management to a level suitable for employment. They will use their problem-solving and technical skills on an individual project that is negotiated with their project supervisor.

Entry Requirements

1) Completion of a previous level 3 program. (BTEC level 3 etc) * 2) Mature students, over 21, will be considered on an interview basis where they can show competence for the course. 3) Admission requirement for an undergraduate degree programme is 80 UCAS points from 6 or 12 unit GCE/VCE qualifications, supported by three GCSEs at grade C or above.


*Level 3 equivalent qualification does not have to be computing discipline. I.e. the course is designed to start at the beginning and build learners skills, knowledge and confidence.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by coursework activities within the units studied. These typically will involve students applying skills and knowledge taught to complete coursework objectives. For example, in Web Development you will be taught how to create a modern interactive web site, you will then be expected to create a web site based on a vocational based brief issued by a client. Some units have small in class tests such as maths and the work placement unit, in year 2, will require a specific number of hours to be completed with an employer.

Career Progression

Upon completion of the course, you can move straight into work in the IT industry. You can if you wish top up to the full degree at USW University of South Wales, with 1 additional year of study. The Foundation Degree ICT is a complete qualification in its own right with USW certification and cap and gown graduation ceremony. Upon completion you will be able to go straight into work within the IT sector or top up to full degree at university.
