Course Information

This Level 2 Subsidiary Diploma, written by Access to Music and validated by Rock School ( ), includes a number of compulsory core units, and specialist units, whilst allowing learners the flexibility to pursue their own choice of four independent pathways – Performance, Technology, Business and Composition. You will be following in the footsteps of former students, including: Ed Sheeran, Jess Glynne and Rita Ora, who all chose to take this vocational route at other UK providers.

You will be able to gain the musical skills and confidence you need, within a supportive, creative environment guided by well-qualified, committed staff with over 20 years professional industry experience who have been approved to deliver the course. Provided at our Nantgarw Campus, learners will utilise a fully equipped, State of the Art, Recording Studio and Mac Lab allowing access to the most up to date facilities and resources. This course is equivalent to four GCSEs.

What Will I Learn?

The course encompasses many facets of music with particular emphasis on: Live Music Performance & Rehearsal skills; Music Sequencing and Production; Live Sound Recording, Organising Music Events; Digital Recording and Production; Remixing; and Live Sound Reinforcement.

The college has built a formidable reputation for engaging learners in vocationally relevant promotional and marketing activities including our annual Music Festival, “Valleys SoundFest” ( ), and our Music Technology Youtube Channel

Both serve to highlight exemplary learner work and illustrate the wealth of extra curricula experience offered to prepare learners for employment in the industry. You will also receive tuition in the more traditional aspects of music practice, including: music performance techniques and rehearsal skills to improve your general musicianship.

Entry Requirements

You will require 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D preferably including Maths/Numeracy or English/Welsh or a level 1 sector skills course qualification.

You will be invited to attend an audition / interview. You will also be required to undertake an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.


You will continuously be assessed throughout the course via practical and written assignments. All units are internally assessed and externally moderated. On successful completion of this qualification an overall grade is given of Pass, Merit or Distinction.
