Level 3 Diploma in Games Art, Design and Animation

Based at our new digital arts studio on the Rhondda Campus, you will explore everything from character design, concept art and animation to digital painting and environment design. Enabling you to develop a diverse skill set, to launch a successful start in the creative sector.


You will explore game art and animation in traditional, 2D digital and 3D formats, using industry standard software to build your design capabilities. You will be taught to embrace your creativity and think outside the box to develop your design, problem solving and creative skills. Following successful completion of year one Level 3 diploma in Games Art, Design and Animation, you will progress onto year two, and study the Level 3 Extended diploma in Game Art, Desing, and Animation. Subject to assessment and portfolio review. Grading equivalents: If you achieve a final distinction grade on the Level 3 extended diploma - it is the equivalent UCAS points as three A* grades at A level.

What Will I Learn?

Using our high-spec Alienware PC’s you will explore the latest technology and design trends within the developing industry of game art, design, and animation. Keeping up to date with fast-moving digital industries is a key feature of the course. You will develop your technical digital design skills through a variety of course work projects


This course will provide you with the required skills to enable you to apply both traditional and digital techniques. The course briefs that are designed to follow industry trends and explore new software During this course you will develop transferrable skills including communication, collaboration, creativity, and design thinking skills. Key areas of the course include: • 2D digital/ traditional animation • CGI Modelling & Animation • Storyboarding • Video editing • Game Design • Character Design • Weapon Design • App design • Life drawing & Anatomy • Industry talks & events • Web design • Contextual studies

Entry Requirements

5 GCSES A*- C including an art related subject, Mathematics and English/Welsh or an equivalent level 2 diploma at merit grade or above in a creative subject, including level 2 literacy and numeracy.


All applicants will be invited to attend an interview and present a portfolio of design-based evidence for review.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, which could include individual course work projects, group projects, presentations and with continual class assessment.

Career Progression

The course will support your career aspirations and help prepare you for a wide range of potential employment opportunities or further/higher education in areas including creative and digital media. You will leave the one-year diploma with essential digital and traditional design skills, and a strong portfolio that demonstrates your potential in Animation, game art and design. Following successful completion of this one-year course with a merit grade or above, you can apply to progress onto the extended diploma and achieve a 3 A level equivalent qualification. Following competition of the extended diploma you will have the opportunity progress to Foundation Studies Art and design at level 3/ 4 to develop your skills further or progress to higher education, studying courses such as game art, game design, 2D/ CGI/ stop-motion animation, graphic design, advertising, VFX etc., or employment.
