Level 3 Pre-Apprenticeship Academy: Mechanical Manufacturing

This course consists of the following accredited qualifications: Level 3, 360 credits, Award in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations Essential Skills Wales qualifications in communications, application of number, or ICT


All full-time learners will be expected to attend skills sessions as well as their chosen vocational course. You will also be asked to attend tutorial sessions as part of your full-time course timetable.

What Will I Learn?

The course allows the learners build the knowledge, understanding and skills they need for career progression or further study.


For the BTEC Award in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the learner will study: Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace Communications for Engineering Technicians Mathematics for Engineering Technicians Mechanical Principles of Engineering Systems Computer-aided Drafting in Engineering Industrial Robot Technology The learner would also study the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) which makes full use of our sector leading mechanical workshops. In the PEO’s you would study: • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements • Working efficiently & effectively in engineering • Using and communicating technical information • Producing components using hand fitting techniques • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations • Preparing and Using milling machines

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs A*-C including a B grade in Maths, C or above in English Language & Science or a Level 2 qualification with the appropriate selection and grades of units. Learners will be invited to attend an interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.


At Coleg y Cymoedd we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your assessments. The better your grades the more options you will have and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher-level course.

Assessment

Your knowledge and practical competences will be continually assessed in both the BTEC and PEO qualifications, this will consist of internal theoretical and practical assessments. The BTEC Award qualification and units are graded Pass/Merit/Distinction, whilst the PEO is graded as pass or fail.

Career Progression

On successful completion of this course previous learners have progressed into careers in many engineering disciplines. Many learners progress onto level 3 Diplomas in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. There is a clear route through to EngTech and progression to Incorporated and Chartered Engineering status. Level 3 Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education institutions.

You will be required to purchase Uniform (T Shirt and Trousers), safety boots & safety glasses (approx £55). Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
