Cymoedd introduces Mindfulness to its curriculum
Coleg y Cymoedd has introduced an exciting new subject to its curriculum to improve the wellbeing, concentration and focus of its learners.
Following extensive research as to the benefits of ‘Mindfulness’, a ten- week secular mindfulness programme will be delivered to the learners at Coleg y Cymoedd; with each session offering a distinct mindfulness skill.
The course aimed at improving concentration and focus will help the learners to fulfil their potential whilst at the college; giving them a taste of mindfulness they can also return to later in life.
Course Tutor Emma Chakrabarti who teaches on the Foundation Learning courses at the college completed the .b (‘dot be’) course, which is part of the Mindfulness in Schools project, in London, as part of her Continued Professional Development Programme.
The Teach.b qualification, along with her own personal mindfulness practice, will enable Emma to deliver the course at the college using presentations and film clips, followed by practical mindful exercises, demonstrations and discussion.
Speaking about the course Emma said” I was eager to attend the training course as there is a great deal of research and evidence regarding the potential benefits of mindfulness for young people. I am looking forward to delivering the course at the college to help the learners cope with the everyday stresses of adolescent life, such as examinations and relationships and to also help them concentrate on their studies, music and sporting activities”.
Endorsing the introduction of the .b course at the college, Al Lewis, Head of School for Vocational Access added, “The college is always looking at different ways to support our learners and I’m sure the Mindfulness sessions delivered by Emma, as part of the curriculum will prove to be popular and beneficial. I am keen to see the results at the end of the sessions and I am sure this is something that can also be introduced cross college; including to our staff, to promote wellbeing”.
