Foundation Degree in Photography
We currently offer the Foundation Degree in Photography course at our Nantgarw Campus. This course is awarded by the University of South Wales.
This course is offered full time over two years (2 days a week). Learners are able to achieve a full honours degree by completing a third year at University of South Wales, Atrium campus.
Coleg y Cymoedd learners will have access to University facilities (including the library and student union) and they will be able to attend guest speaker talks, allowing an overall integrated experience.
There will be a variety of field trips over the course of your 2-year programme, including Cardiff Bay, Lacock Abbey, Ffotogallery, National Museum of Wales, Bristol, Bath and more. There is also a guest speaker programme at Coleg y Cymoedd which includes seminars by landscape, studio, documentary, music photographers and practitioners currently working in the field.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
• Gain an understanding of photography as an art form and/or as a career pathway
• Learn how to use the camera to its full potential i.e. manual settings and equipment needed for specific purposes
• Understand image editing and post production techniques
• Gain knowledge of photography from a historical and contemporary point of view
• Develop opportunities to achieve a career in photography
• Make photographic industry links whilst undertaking ‘live’ briefs and work-based learning projects
Essential Information
This course currently runs Year 1 Wednesday and Thursday, Year 2 Monday and Tuesday 9.00am-4.00pm
You will need your own Digital SLR (preferably with interchangeable lenses) for this course.
In addition, you will be required to purchase other materials such as: Memory cards, tripod, camera bag, USB drives, sketchbooks/files and an A3 portfolio. Some of these materials can be purchased in our Art Shop at a student-discounted rate. As part of the requirements for different Modules you will also be required to purchase your own prints. Your Module Leader will advise you on the best places to get your photographs printed.
The Foundation Degree in Photography staff encourages learners to build their own photographic profile by entering competitions and sharing their general day-to-day work via social media. The course also has a Blog site to promote the progression of our current learners and showcase their work allowing new and potential students to follow the learning experience. See the links below

Courses Fees and Grants
Course Fees for the Foundation Degree in Photography are £7500 for full time applicants.
There are grants that may be available.
Eligible full-time student can claim a minimum grant of £1,000 they will not have to pay back, regardless of their household income, and means-tested grants of up to £8,100 will be available to those who need them most.
Students who wish to study at Higher Education level can contact Student Finance Wales for financial help with course fees, provided that they are living in Wales
