What Learners Say

Imogen Llewellyn

About you and your background
I am Imogen Llewellyn, I am 19 years old and I am from Cardiff.

What course do you study a Coleg y Cymoedd?
I am in year 2 studying Business level 3 at Coleg y Cymoedd. I currently have a part time job as well as being a full time student.

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I had heard about the college and I wanted a change. Coleg y Cymoedd had more resources than my old school and it had more to offer me. I went onto the college’s website and found the business course and thought I would really enjoy it.

Why did you decide to study this course?
I have always had an interest in business and this course offered a more hands on way to learn and offered opportunities to take part in competitions such as Brolio. On the business course, we cover such a wide variety of subjects within business that it has enabled me to discover what I enjoy, which is finance, but also develop my knowledge in other areas of business.

What are the benefits of studying at Coleg Y Cymoedd?
In the college there are a wide variety of facilities available to me. Most classes we have computer rooms so we always have access to the internet to do research and to do assignments. The college library has many computers and books relevant to the course to help with any assignments. If you are at home and stuck, you are able to access the online library, which you can use to read the books without taking them out of the library.
The college has a gym that the students are able to use at a discounted price and is open during the holidays. The college also offers ‘BOOST’ activities on Wednesday afternoon to help boost your CV and other sports activities.

What do you intend to do next?
At the start of college, I was not sure if I wanted to go to university of go straight into work. By researching what opportunities were available for higher education alternatives, I found apprenticeships for Accounting. I have been accepted onto the Deloitte Bright Start scheme which is a 4 year scheme where I will have a salary and work whilst completing my accounting exams. Once I have completed these 4 years, I will be a chartered accountant.

How is this course helping you achieve your ambitions?
This course has helped me discover what I enjoy and find what I wanted to do after college. The course has given me the UCAS points that I need to apply for university and apply for jobs. I have received 5 university offers and a job with Deloitte, which is what I have wanted to do. The course has given me many opportunities to develop my CV through volunteering, work experience and prestigious competitions that helped in my interview.

How will studying impact your life?
Studying this course will help boost your confidence as it involves a lot of group work, it helps improve your presentation skills and develop your ability to speak in public. The course also improves your writing and research skills as a lot of the work is independent research. This course will also develop future opportunities as we have many trips to visit businesses, to universities and the careers advisors are always available to help.

What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The first course I studied at Coleg y Cymoedd was CACHE Level 1 Child Care and Education. Since then I have completed CACHE Level 2 & 3 and progressed onto the Foundation Degree. I then decided to come back to study the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (P.G.C.E).

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
Coleg y Cymoedd has a good reputation and I always wanted to do well in Education. My expectations were high and Coleg y Cymoedd were able to support me returning to learning as a mature learner; whilst being a mum to my three beautiful children.

Why did you choose to study this course?
My goal was to train as a teacher and I knew the course(s) would provide me with the qualifications, knowledge and understanding required to support all children and their families.

Following the Foundation Degree I went on to achieve my B.A. Hons. Degree in Early Years Care and Education but that wasn’t enough! After speaking to a tutor I decided to study again and complete my P.G.C.E., I succeeded very well and have completed my education journey by qualifying as a TEACHER with a FIRST.

How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
My learning journey has allowed me to become an experienced and competent practitioner. Gaining my P.G.C.E. has opened so many doors to my career I can now do what I love and that is, teach children and young adults with Additional Learning Needs -something very close to my heart.

What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

Level 1 Creativity in Business 17/18

Level 2 Diploma in Business 18/19

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I didn’t do very well at school because I moved around from school to school during my exam time. I had very low attendance and demonstrated bad behaviour at school, because it wasn’t for me.

I enrolled on a Painting and Decorating course at the college but unfortunately my skin reacted badly and I had some health issues so I moved to a training provider for a few months studying Customer Service.

It was then that I decided that college was where I needed to be to get a good qualification to secure a good job. I applied for Level 1 Creativity in Business because I wanted a course where I could improve my IT skills and eventually progress on to Level 2 Business. My family recommended Ystrad Mynach campus because they had good experiences of it.

Why did you choose to study this course?

I chose Level 1 to get on to Level 2. I’m hoping to complete my Level 2 Business course this year and then move on to Level 3 next year; in order to get into university. I would like to study the Foundation Degree in Business and Management by evening, through the college along with my GCSE’s in Maths and English.

What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?

Studying at the college has made me more sociable, punctual as I don’t find college as stressful as school; my attendance is 100%. I have excellent grades because I enjoy what I’m doing and studying. The staff are really approachable, I have a good relationship with my tutors and I can talk to them. I was a Team Leader for the 2 Enterprise Challenges that we organised to raise money for the Campus Champion. The staff motivate and push me to do things and encourage me to do well giving me lots of praise. Without them encouraging me I wouldn’t have felt confident to be a Team Leader.

What do you intend to do next?

I’m hoping to complete Level 2 Business this year and move on to Level 3 next year in order to get into university. I would like to study the Foundation Degree in Business and Management by evening through the college.

How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?

The course I’m doing now is preparing me for Level 3 next year and for my future course the Foundation Degree in Business and Management.

How will studying impact on your life? e.g. increase confidence, better career opportunities, fulfil an ambition

Studying at the college is building my confidence, giving me a better chance of a good job, helping me to socialise and focus on getting to where I want to be. When I was studying on the Level 1 course I received the Shining Star Award, sponsored by Caerphilly County Borough Council at the College Annual Prize Evening ceremony.  This was in recognition for my excellent results and 100% attendance. I also received the Business Student of the Year Award from my tutors on the Ystrad Mynach campus.

Would you recommend this college and this course to others?

I would recommend the Level 1 and Level 2 courses that I have studied here at Ystrad Mynach campus because I have gained so much from it.
