About you and background
My name is Matthew Brown and I have just turned twenty years old. I am originally from Leicester in the East Midlands although I moved to Caerphilly during April 2016. I studied for my GCSE’s at St Martins and gained a total of 13 overall (A*-C). I then completed my first year of A-level study at St Martins and that was when I decided that exam-based learning was not my preferred method of study. I was certain I wanted to find a course at Coleg y Cymoedd that I was interested in, I visited the college on results day to talk to the Business course team to discuss my options. They were extremely helpful in explaining the various routes that I could take, and I was recommended that the Level Three Extended Diploma in Business course was the best direction for me.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I have always set my sights on a career in business. I found the Level Three Extended Diploma in Business course based within Coleg y Cymoedd’s Nantgarw Campus and I knew instantly that this course was what I wanted to do and that it would enable me to access a route into higher education which was my long-term plan.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
Coleg y Cymoedd offered me the facilities I was looking for; it is also well known in the local area and has many influential industry partners that frequently came into the college to talk about careers in business and aspects of their day to day lives. This helped with completing college work as it offered a different perspective to the modules that I was studying.
Why did you choose to study this course?
As I previously mentioned, I have always had a keen interest in a career within the business sector. This course also enabled me to access a route into higher education, I am currently about to start studying for a degree in Business and Management at the University of South Wales. I was also very interested in the modules that the course had to offer.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
There are a number of benefits to studying at Coleg y Cymoedd including the lecturers that are always ready to help you with your work, nothing was ever too much trouble and they are all super friendly. They have also made the course as practical as possible by organising visits to local businesses so that students can talk to entrepreneurs about their experiences with the process of starting a new business.
During one of our modules called “Event Management” the lecturers gave us the opportunity to plan and carry out our own business event for another group of learners within the college. This enabled me to put various new skills I had amassed whilst being at the college to the test including time management, public speaking, as well as managing funds/costs.
What do you intend to do next/what are you doing now that you have left?
I have now obtained a place to study Business and Management (Hons) at the University of South Wales commencing at the end of September. This is a three/four-year course which will allow me to study for a master’s degree after completion. After university, I am aiming to either start my own business or take up a management position at a pre existing organisation.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
It is undeniable that the college has empowered my ambition to take up a career within the industry by giving me the confidence to try new ventures outside of my comfort zone. At the end of the two years studying at Coleg y Cymoedd I managed to achieve a grade of
Distinction* Distinction* Distinction* which just shows that you can achieve anything if you put the effort in and you find the course stimulating and interesting.
Would you recommend this college and this course to others?
I would highly recommend this college to anyone who is looking to go to University, full time employment, start an apprenticeship, to improve their education portfolio or even to start a business. The course itself has given me so many life skills that I can take forward to university and use every day. I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of college life from studying to meeting good friends which I will continue to keep in touch with.
