Katy Chedzoy

About you and background

My name is Katy Chedzoy, I am 23 years old and I am from Hendreforgan, RCT where I live with both my parents and my older brother.. I also have an older sister who is currently living out in Vietnam teaching English.

Previous School?

My previous place of study was Tonyrefail Comprehensive School, which I attended from 2009 until 2015. It was during my time in this school, that I studied health and social care level 2 before going into college.

What course are you studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I previously attended Coleg y Cymoedd where I studied health and social care level 3. This course lasted 2 years in duration, and I can honestly say it was the most beneficial and positive time throughout my education. I not only learnt so much which allowed me to gain more understanding about the care sector, but I was provided with so much support.

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I made the decision to study at Coleg Y Cymoedd because I had heard nothing but positive things about the college and the people. I attended an open day there, and everyone was so welcome and I instantly felt comfortable there. I decided that even though this college wasn’t the closest to where I live, the course was exactly what I was looking for which is why I made the decision to attend Nantgarw campus.

Why did you choose to study this course?

I chose to study health and social care because my goal has always been to work with individuals with learning difficulties. Growing up with my older brother, who has a learning disability I learnt very early on about the hardships people with disabilities face. I got to meet some of my brothers friends, some of whom had very complex needs. Seeing the difficulties they faced, made me realise just how much I wanted to be the person to support them. However, as I said I was very young at this point and still had a lot to learn. I made the decision to study health and social care when I was in school which I really enjoyed, and so continuing this in college was ideal. The course helped me learn more about different disabilities, and how to support those who needed it.

What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?

There are so many benefits to studying at Coleg Y Cymoedd, one of which is that it is a very relaxed environment namely the Nantgarw Campus. The staff who work there, and the lecturers are all incredibly supportive and take a relaxed but effective approach to their teaching methods which has proven to be effective for students.

What do you intend to do next?

My intention has always been to support individuals with learning difficulties, and thanks to the health and social care course I have  been given that opportunity. Upon finishing the course, my plan was to go straight into the workplace, however with the support and encouragement the lecturers provided to me I applied to a foundation community health and well-being course at the university of South Wales. After being accepted onto this course and passing I then applied and got accepted onto the course learning disability nursing which I am currently still in my 2nd year of study.

How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?

This course had exceeded my expectations so much, and definitely helped me achieve my ultimate goal. I cannot stress enough how much support and encouragement this college provided to me, I became so much more confident which allowed me to pursue my career further. Without this course, I never would have gone on to study my nursing degree.

How will studying impact on your life?

Studying isn’t something people like to do, myself included. However when you study for things that you are passionate about and if it is something that you truly want then it can have such a positive impact on your life. Like I said, if it is something you want to pursue and you are passionate about it then you can achieve it as long as you put the effort in.

Would you recommend this college and this course to others?

I would 100% recommend this college & course to anyone and everyone. Like I said, the support you receive is amazing. If I ever had a problem that needed to be rectified I could easily contact the services available there and it would be sorted for me straight away. Everyone there is so kind & understanding so there is nothing that can’t be done to help if you need it. And yes recommending the course is something I do often, even now with my friends I always say how much this course meant to me. The lecturers were nothing but encouraging, understanding and would help however they could. The course has allowed me to work in the care sector, and I’ve always said that if your goal is to do that then this course is perfect for you!
