Laura Hicks

I am 21 Years of age and live with my partner in Caerphilly. My hobbies are socialising and helping and supporting those who need it.

What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

At Ystrad Mynach College I enrolled on the Level 1 Childcare then progressed to Level 3 Childcare. I completed both years of Level 3 and I’m happy to say that I am so grateful to be given an education full of encouragement and support by staff who worked alongside me.

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I have always been keen to achieve a qualification to have a better future for myself. My dream was to work with children no matter if I am supporting them one to one or teaching them to learn new skills. I have always wanted to work with children and when I was given the opportunity to have a qualification to have a better future for myself then I took it immediately. I followed my dream.

Why did you choose to study this course?

I chose to study this course as it is my dream to work with children and watch them improve on their progress, targets and to learn new skills they never knew they had.

What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?

The benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd is meeting new people, socialising, making long lasting friendships and increasing my confidence.

What do you intend to do next/what are you doing now that you have left?

I have created my own babysitting business and doing it full time at the moment. Business is doing well and I love what I do. I am also applying for employment at local schools in my area so I can have two jobs, both working with children.

How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?

This course has helped me to become a Level 3 qualified Teaching Assistant. It has helped me to form relationships and build on the skills I never knew I had before enrolling at Coleg y Cymoedd. I would never have thought I would be saying that I progressed from each level and worked hard to achieve my qualification. There were times when I struggled and had tough times but I was encouraged and supported all the way by my tutor.

How will studying impact on your life?

Studying has helped me reach my dream, have a future for myself and increased my confidence and self-esteem massively. It has made me realise if you want something then go and get it and let nobody get in your way. Hard work pays off in the end, just remain positive.

Would you recommend this college and this course to others?

I would highly recommend Coleg y Cymoedd and the course to anyone who wants to work with children for the rest of your life. It has changed my life for the better and I am so lucky to have been given this opportunity.
