My name is Nathan Mogford I am 21 years old and live in Abercynon, Pontypridd.

What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed)

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I have always been interested in the Uniformed Public Services in particular the Ambulance Service. I thought the modules surrounding this profession at Coleg y Cymoedd were very interesting e.g. planning for major incidents. This was a very interesting topic.

Why did you choose to study this course?
I left school, as the subjects were not suited to the career pathway I wanted to take. So after seeing the syllabus at Coleg y Cymoedd open day and talking to the course leaders and past students who told me how interesting the course was and how motivating and supportive the college and tutors were, I decided to apply for the course as I felt it would help me towards my ambition of becoming a paramedic.

What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
This particular course comes with many benefits, like having very supportive tutors who gave us a vast amount of knowledge through their experiences and the through the college gave us opportunities to see the different multi discipled environment that is the unformed public services. The course offered numerous educational trips and a great variety of guest speakers from a diverse background. We had a guest speaker from the Welsh Ambulance Service which was very useful for me as it give me a great insight into the educational background needed to fulfil a career in the Ambulance service and what the job would entail. It gave me the encouragement to work to my full potential.

What are you doing now that you have left?
Since passing the course with full distinction, I am now studying a BSC (Hons) Paramedic Science at the University of the West of England.

How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
From achieving Distinctions in my BTEC in Public Services, it put me it great stead to apply to university to studying Paramedic Science to fulfil my career as a Paramedic. It gave me sufficient UCAS points to enable me to apply to the universities I wanted to go to. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support and backing from my Tutors Sue Underwood-Gibbs and Rachel Roberts.

How will studying impact on your life?
The course gives you a great insight into the Public Services and acts as a stepping-stone to you’re chosen profession. It has given me great confidence from exposing me to the harsh environments that public servants work in and gave me the opportunity to further my educational career.

Would you recommend this college/this course to others?
I would recommend anyone who is interested in working in public services whether it be the Armed Forces, Ambulance, Police or Fire service. Coleg y Cymoedd is a great environment to learn and the tutors are very supportive whatever you’re educational background they point you in the right direction and create a great environment to be in. would highly recommend anyone to this course.
