Dan is a prime example of a learner that flourished in the right environment that we provide at the Coleg y Cymoedd. He progressed well and worked hard to achieve both his Level 2 and Level 3 BTEC in sport but also used the wider skills that he learnt at the College in an inspirational way. He is a past learner that all of the staff are very proud of and made the most of the opportunities provided to him by the College. This has allowed him to go out and coach football (soccer) for numerous summers in the USA (in a number of different states) and culminated in Dan being offered a 9 month contract to live and coach football to players of all ages and abilities in Denver, Colarado, a truly life changing experience.

Katy Bridges

About you and background

Katy Bridges, 21, Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil

What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

BTEC first diploma in sport & BTEC Extended National Diploma in Sport.

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I never really excelled at school after coming out in year 11 with 4 GCSE's staying on for A-levels was not an option for me. The only thing I really enjoyed in school was sport. College was what I wanted to do, after looking at different colleges I loved the Ystrad Mynach campus of Coleg y Cymoedd. I applied for the BTEC National Diploma in Sport, but due to not having the grades I went onto BTEC First Diploma in Sport, I’m glad I went down that path as I learnt the foundation of sport and then I moved onto the next level when I eventually got onto the BTEC National.

Why did you choose to study this course?

I chose to study sport as I always loved this subject at school. Theory lessons were always my favourite part of physical education and to be on a sport course learning about sport every day, I loved the idea!

What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?

It is a local college, I got to meet great friends and experience things school doesn't offer. I went on great trips, one of my favourite was tours of the Cardiff City stadium. The college has great facilities as well.

After completing the BTEC First Diploma in Sport, I applied for the BTEC National Diploma in Sport, I loved this course and all the topics within it, and this was the course that made me want to further my education.

What do you intend to do next?

Since leaving college, I progressed onto a Bsc (Hons) Sports Studies Degree at the University of South Wales, where I will be graduating in the summer of 2015. I found that this course was the next step from college, and my college tutors were very helpful when I was applying to university.

I have recently secured my first graduate job as a sports coach with Merthyr Sports Development, and I am starting my PGCE in September.

How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?

The college has helped me achieve my ambitions due to the fun and great experiences I had while studying on the course!

How will studying impact on your life?

Studying has impacted on my life by allowing me to achieve good grades, helped to build my confidence from coming out of school with only a few GCSE's, allowed me to study higher education in university and achieve a degree in a subject I love as well as allowing me to get a job in the sport industry.

Would you recommend this college/this course to others?

Yes! I would definitely recommend this course and college especially with the new sport facilities that have been recently become available. The course and the sports staff at the Ystrad Mynach campus of Coleg y Cymoedd made my college experience brilliant!

Katy was a hard working student and committed herself to 3 years at college. Katy showed dedication to her studies and was able to demonstrate her understanding of key subject areas within a range of sports settings. Katy always took opportunities to expand her learning experiences by completing a number of coaching badges, as well as volunteering within the local community. This resulted in her becoming a coach of the future for Caerphilly Sport Development. It’s great to see that Katy has been able to use these additional qualifications within her university life. Katy was a pleasure to have in the class, her confidence definitely improved as she progressed through the sports courses and she deserves the success she is experiencing within university.
