Carys James

Carys Louise James, age 23, from Hirwaun, Aberdare

What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I studied Cabin Crew level 2 at Ystrad Mynach from 2011-2012

What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I decided to study at Ystrad Mynach because the course was exactly what I was looking for, it fitted in with my A Level studies at school and it was close enough to home to use public transport to get there as I did not drive.

Why did you choose to study this course?

My career aspirations have been to work within the airline industry as Cabin Crew and travel the world from a young age, as soon as I was old enough I started looking for a course that would help me achieve my dream.

What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?

The benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd was the support received from the dedicated staff. My tutors at the time were Alicia and Gabriella, they were great and motivated the class to pursue their ambitions in becoming Cabin Crew, the course content was relevant to the industry and helped me confirm this was a career I definitely wanted to pursue.

What do you intend to do next/what are you doing now that you have left?

Once I’d completed and achieved the course, I also completed my A levels and a BA Hons Business and HR Degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University but the desire to work with an airline and travel was still strong.

I wrote to BA asking them how could I achieve the dream of one day working for them and they advised I get as much experience as possible in the hospitality industry, which I did.

After working in Bars and Hotels part time and as Assistant Manager of the Visitor Centre at The Welsh Whiskey Company, I have been employed since June 2017 as Cabin Crew with British Airways based at London Heathrow travelling the world and living my dream. Prior to this I worked for Thomas Cook based in Cardiff as Cabin Crew (my first Cabin Crew job) for summer 16/17.

How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?

I believe the course has definitely helped me to achieve the job of my dreams, it gave me a brilliant insight into the world of Cabin Crew.

As part of the course we had a trip to Cranebank (BAs training facility for crew back in 2012) it is now known as GLA (Global Learning Academy), the visit provided a valuable insight into what goes on behind the scenes, the significant degree of responsibility that Cabin Crew have and especially the “glamour” of flying.

How will studying impact on your life? e.g. increase confidence, better career opportunities, fulfil an ambition.

Studying has given me the confidence to achieve things I never imagined I could, it has allowed me to fulfil my ambition to work for one of the world’s best known airlines and has opened doors for better career opportunities if I wish to progress.

Would you recommend this college and this course to others?

I would highly recommend Coleg y Cymoedd as a place to study, learn and achieve ambitions. I would also definitely recommend the course to anyone who is thinking about a career in the airline industry as Cabin Crew!
