Starting College: What You Need to Know

Get ready for a new and exciting learning experience at Coleg y Cymoedd

You’re the boss

College is a new and exciting learning experience where you’re treated like an adult. You have more freedom and flexibility in your timetable, but you also need to be responsible for your own learning. This means attending your classes, doing your work during your study breaks, and managing your time well to meet your deadlines.

You’re not alone

Don’t worry if you feel nervous about starting college. You’re not the only one and we’re here to help you. You’ll have a Personal Tutor who can support you with any academic or personal issues. You’ll also have access to college support services, from financial, health and transport support to study and career advice.

You have options

If you begin your course and decide it’s not really for you, don’t worry. These things happen, and that’s why we allow a whole half term for you to decide whether you like your course or not. If you don’t, let us know, and we’ll help you figure out a solution, even if that means switching to a different course altogether.

You’re accepted as you are

We care about your mental health and wellbeing and want you to feel safe and supported at college. We understand that some learners have gone through difficult or traumatic experiences, and we try to be sensitive and respectful of your needs and feelings. We also want to help you develop your confidence, skills, and resilience. We have a whole college strategy and Wellbeing and Safeguarding Team to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for everyone.

You’re part of a community

College is the best place to meet new people and make friends because you’ll be with those who have the same interests and goals as you. And with CymoeddXtra, you can join clubs, societies, and events to have fun and learn new skills. You’ll learn more about this during your induction and Freshers’ Fayre – a week to help you get used to college life and meet your tutors before lessons start. You’ll feel at home in no time.

You’ll get lots of opportunities

During your time at college, you’ll have lots of opportunities to learn new things and improve your skills. From work experience and national contests, to trips and university conventions, you’ll be ready to take your next step when you leave us, whether that’s further education, training, or work.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Coleg y Cymoedd soon and help you achieve your potential. Just head to reception on your first day and we’ll point out where you need to go.

If you haven’t applied yet, there’s still time to join us this September and start your journey with us.
