Overview

This qualification is designed for electricians and engineers who wish to gain the skills and knowledge required to safely design, install and commission electrical energy storage systems (EESS), such as battery storage, in domestic and small commercial environments.

What will I learn?

  • Overview of electrical energy storage technologies and systems
  • System design principles, including sizing, configuration, and compatibility
  • Installation practices for EESS in accordance with current standards
  • Commissioning, handover, testing, and maintenance of battery storage systems
  • Integration with renewable energy systems (e.g. Solar PV)
  • Understanding regulations and health and safety requirements, including BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems

Funding eligibility criteria

  • Aged 19+
  • Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

  • Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts)
  • Self-employed
  • Full-time carer
  • Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

  • Must be qualified electrician (level 3) or hold a recognised qualification in electrical installation
  • Strong understanding of BS 7671 (18th Edition) is essential
  • Experience with renewable energy systems (e.g. solar PV) is beneficial
  • Suitable for those already working in the electrical or renewables industry

Assessment

  • Online multiple-choice or written knowledge assessment
  • Practical assessment covering installation, testing, and commissioning of EESS
  • Completion of documentation related to system design and commissioning

Career progression

  • Enhances eligibility for roles in low carbon and smart energy sectors
  • Supports progression to work with renewable energy systems and energy consultancy
  • Complements other qualifications such as Solar PV, EV Charging or Retrofit Coordination
  • Meets requirements for Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) installer pathways

Course dates will be discussed directly with the training provider upon successful completion of funding application. Any course dates arranged with the training provider prior to funding being secured may not be honoured – Course dates will only be confirmed once funding has been approved.
