Overview

The New to Gas Diploma is a comprehensive Managed Learning Programme (MLP) designed for individuals entering the gas industry with little or no previous experience. This structured course provides the knowledge, skills, and on-site experience required to become a Gas Safe registered engineer. It meets the standards set by the Gas Training Specification and is recognised as a valid route to ACS assessment.

What will I learn?

Gas safety legislation, regulations, and industry standards
Combustion, ventilation, and flueing principles
Gas appliance installation, servicing, and fault finding
Pipework sizing, tightness testing, and purging
Safe isolation, pressure testing, and emergency procedures
Practical skills in domestic gas systems, including boilers, cookers, and fires
Completion of a portfolio of on-site evidence under qualified supervision

Funding eligibility criteria

Aged 19+
Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts), earning under £34,303
Self-employed, earning under £34,303
Full-time carer, earning under £34,303
Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

There are no formal prerequisites.

Assessment

Ongoing theory assessments and practical tasks. Completion of a workplace portfolio. Final assessment through ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) upon successful completion of the course.

Career progression

Eligibility to undertake ACS assessments (e.g. CCN1 and appliance-specific qualifications)
Entry into employment as a Gas Safe registered engineer
Further training in renewables, boiler diagnostics, commercial gas, or heating system design

Course dates will be discussed directly with the training provider upon successful completion of funding application. Any course dates arranged with the training provider prior to funding being secured may not be honoured – Course dates will only be confirmed once funding has been approved.
