Overview

This BPEC-accredited course is designed for heating and plumbing professionals who wish to install, commission, and maintain solar thermal hot water systems. The training is mapped to National Occupational Standards (NOS) and supports compliance with MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) requirements. It provides both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to safely and efficiently work with solar thermal technologies in domestic and light commercial settings.

Funding eligibility criteria

Aged 19+
Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts)
Self-employed
Full-time carer
Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

Plumbing or heating qualification level 2/3 AND Unvented Hot Water Systems (G3) and Water Regulations

Assessment

Theory assessments (multiple-choice or written). Practical assessments, including commissioning and fault finding. Completion of relevant documentation and compliance checks.

Career progression

Qualify as a solar thermal installer, supporting MCS-registered installations
Enhance expertise in renewable heating systems
Progress to related courses in heat pumps, system design, or renewables integration
