You will study a range of units, which include looking at playwork principles, working within a play environment with children and young people aged 4-16, supporting play, health and safety, reflective practice and the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people in the play environment.
Attendance is 3 days in college and at least 1 day in a playwork placement.
During the year, you will have mandatory practical work placement training with children within the relevant age range in a play environment such as, breakfast and after school clubs, holiday play schemes. In addition to these units, you will study Essential Skills, Communication, Application of Number and the Welsh Baccalaureate.
You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- D, including Maths/Numeracy and English/Welsh at Grade D. As well as producing a satisfactory DBS. Applicants with appropriate work experience, who do not necessarily meet the academic qualifications, may be considered.
You will be invited to attend an interview and you will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: direct observation within the workplace, written assignments or a task set by CACHE. For the diploma the learner must achieve 45 credits from 12 mandatory units, including the 8 Award and Certificate units, plus a minimum of 16 credits from the optional units.
Higher level qualifications can lead to careers such as: Playwork Development Officer and Supervisor or Manager of any playwork provision setting; Play Development Officers - may work for local authorities managing, implementing and monitoring a local Play Strategy; and Playwork qualified Youth Workers - could be part of a team running environmental projects, residential activities or outdoor education. This qualification provides opportunities for the learner to progress to CACHE Level 3 Playwork
qualifications, playwork qualifications with other awarding bodies and employment in the
playwork sector.
Learners attending Care and Childcare courses need to purchase a £ 11.00 polo shirt to wear at placement and to pay for a DBS check.
