Level 2 in Playwork

This qualification is an introduction to the primary aspects of working with children and young people between the ages of 4 to 16 in play environments. It provides an understanding of the importance of play and playwork in children and young people’s lives.

The Diploma covers the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision and requires the learner to demonstrate the full application of these in the workplace, and is aimed at all those who wish to work in a supervised role in a wide range of playwork environments. Learners will need to be working or on practical placement as they need to show both knowledge and skills. Perhaps you would like to work with children or young people in a less structured or formal setting than a school or nursery. You might like the idea of working in after school or holiday clubs, adventure playgrounds or youth groups that encourage children and young people to challenge themselves through play - enabling them to learn about risk in a safe yet stimulating environment. Playworkers can work in a wide range of environments including: After School Clubs, Adventure, Playgrounds, Soft Play Areas, Family Centres and Holiday Clubs.

What Will I Learn?

You will study a range of units, which include looking at playwork principles, working within a play environment with children and young people aged 4-16, supporting play, health and safety, reflective practice and the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people in the play environment.

Attendance is 3 days in college and at least 1 day in a playwork placement.
During the year, you will have mandatory practical work placement training with children within the relevant age range in a play environment such as, breakfast and after school clubs, holiday play schemes. In addition to these units, you will study Essential Skills, Communication, Application of Number and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Entry Requirements

You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- D, including Maths/Numeracy and English/Welsh at Grade D. As well as producing a satisfactory DBS. Applicants with appropriate work experience, who do not necessarily meet the academic qualifications, may be considered.

You will be invited to attend an interview and you will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.

Assessment

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: direct observation within the workplace, written assignments or a task set by CACHE. For the diploma the learner must achieve 45 credits from 12 mandatory units, including the 8 Award and Certificate units, plus a minimum of 16 credits from the optional units.

Career Progression

Higher level qualifications can lead to careers such as: Playwork Development Officer and Supervisor or Manager of any playwork provision setting; Play Development Officers - may work for local authorities managing, implementing and monitoring a local Play Strategy; and Playwork qualified Youth Workers - could be part of a team running environmental projects, residential activities or outdoor education. This qualification provides opportunities for the learner to progress to CACHE Level 3 Playwork
qualifications, playwork qualifications with other awarding bodies and employment in the
playwork sector.
