Host Families

Become a host family for Coleg y Cymoedd Learners (International & UK)

We are always looking for hosts around our four campuses, (Aberdare, Nantgarw, Rhondda & Ystrad Mynach), who would like to offer a room and a home from home experience to one or a group of our learners. These learners could be requiring host placement from 2 weeks up to a full academic year. We sometimes have learners from many different nationalities that are looking for the full Welsh experience and culture.

Some of our families have children at home, others are families who love animals and have pets and we also have some that don’t. Other families have older children who may have left home and who would like to offer their spare room to a learner. Please get in touch if you are interested in becoming a host family for Coleg y Cymoedd.

Who can be a host family?

If you have a good-sized spare room/s in your house and you and your family are open to hosting a learner, then you might be ideally suited to become a host family. A host family would suitably be a person or a family who is interested in welcoming learners from all different nationalities, with the right facilities and willing to offer a home from home experience.

Hosting our learners is a very rewarding experience, our current and past hosts always tell us what a great experience it is for them and the whole family, some of which remain in touch for years to come.

Vetting process

To become a host family, you must first register your interest.

Step 1

Once we have established that you live in an area where we have host family vacancies, you will receive an email from us asking you to complete our application form. We then automatically take up 2 references per adult in the family.

Step 2

We will then ask you to start the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) process for every member of the family who is over 16. Please note, the host will need to pay for DBS application.

Step 3

Our Coordinator will get in touch to arrange a time for a house inspection. We will then inspect your house, checking the rooms and facilities, fire alarms and gas safety certificates (if you have gas), and conduct ID checks so we can complete the DBS process.

Step 4

Once you are registered, receive DBS and reference clearance and we have inspected your home, you will be all set up and ready to start hosting students.

Once the initial vetting has been done and you are fully enrolled as a family, we will automatically update your DBS and revisit your home each year.

What next?

Once you are fully enrolled as a host family, we will contact you as soon as we have learners that are seeking host families within your area. Sometimes we have learners that require hosting immediately, other times there maybe several months before hosts are required within your area. We do however keep in touch with all our hosts on a regular basis to discuss potential hosting needs and provide updates.

Payments

All our hosts will receive monthly paid via BACS directly from the college when actively hosting. Payments are at £150 per week to include B&B with the addition of evening meals.
