HNC in Mechanical Engineering

The HNC in Mechanical Engineering at Coleg y Cymoedd, Nantgarw Campus is a part-time, two-year course, awarded by the University of South Wales.
The HNC provides a flexible route to degree study and is a recognised qualification. Once you complete the HNC you have the option to progress on to the HND Mechanical Engineering and then to a degree in a chosen university.


This course is particularly suited to those within the Engineering and Manufacturing sector and will be delivered via lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. This course comprises of one day and evening per week, although this does have some flexibility to allow students and their employers to study at their selected rate.

You will gain transferable skills in communication, problem-solving and teamwork, which will make you attractive to employers in other sectors. Successful completion will give you the academic qualifications required to gain EngTech status.

What Will I Learn?

The units covered are as follows:
• Engineering Mathematics 1 – 20 credits
• Design and Manufacture – 20 credits
• Professional Engineering Techniques – 20 credits
• Mechanical Science 1 – 20 credits
• Measurement Systems – 20 credits
• Thermofluids 1 – 20 credits




Entry Requirements

Coleg y Cymoedd considers all applications on an individual basis which means that we could make offers based on qualifications, personal profile and experience.

Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed may also be acceptable.

Typical A-Level Offer - DD to include Mathematics or a Science subject

Typical BTEC Offer -BTEC Extended Diploma Merit Merit Merit or BTEC Diploma Merit Merit.


Typical VRQ offer – at least a VRQ Level 3 Diploma in an appropriate discipline with a unit of Maths included

You will be invited to attend an interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.

At Coleg y Cymoedd we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your assessments. The better your grades the more options you will have and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher-level course.

Assessment

You will be assessed through multiple forms of assessment such as, practical based work, essay writing, portfolio based work and onsite timed assessment.

Career Progression

On completion of the HNC Mechanical Engineering, students are encouraged to progress onto the HND in Mechanical Engineering here at Coleg Y Cymoedd.
