Level 2 in Mechanical Engineering

Start (w/c): 05/09/2022 Full Time - To be arranged (09:00 to 16:00) Nantgarw

Course Information

Mechanical engineers create solutions and solve problems, playing a central role in the design and implementation of moving parts in a range of industries. As a mechanical engineer you'll provide efficient solutions to the development of processes and products, ranging from small component designs to extremely large plants, machinery or vehicles. You'll work on all stages of a product, from research and development to design and manufacture, through to installation and final commissioning.

Most industries rely on a form of mechanical systems, and mechanical engineering is thought to be one of the most diverse of all engineering disciplines. Due to this, there are employment opportunities across several sectors. The VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualification) focusses on the practical aspects of Engineering. The qualification covers the intermediate knowledge, understanding, and skills that are required by someone working in the engineering industry. You will learn by completing practical projects and assessments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities, and demands. All full-time learners will be expected to attend skills sessions as well as their chosen vocational course. You will also be asked to attend tutorial sessions as part of your full-time course timetable.

What Will I Learn?

For the VRQ Diploma, you will study the following units:

• Engineering Environmental Awareness • Engineering Techniques • Engineering Mathematics and Science Principle • Fitting & Assembly Techniques • Manual Turning Techniques • Manual Milling Techniques

For the QPEO Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations, you will complete the following unit:

• Preparing and using lathes for Turning techniques

Entry Requirements

You will require 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D including Maths/Numeracy, English Language/Welsh (First Language) and Science or a Level 1 qualification with the appropriate selection of units. You will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.

Assessment methods within this qualification include an on-screen multiple-choice examination for the mandatory unit and a Centre marked practical and theory assessments for the optional units. The on-screen multiple-choice examination is set by EAL and marked by EAL. The internal assessment is set by EAL and marked by members of the delivery team at the Centre.
