1. Preparing for college

College choices – it’s an exciting transition for students and their parents.

We work closely with local schools so learners can benefit from support activities during their final year:

A learner celebrates getting into college
  • School visits to college – Experience college life for the day, alongside your school friends.
  • Parents’ and leavers’ evenings – These can be for everyone, or just for youngsters with ALN and their families. Meet our staff, have an informal chat and find out about support arrangements.
  • Individual visits for parents and carers – Speak to the ALN Co-ordinator (ALNCo) at your child’s school, or contact us directly to arrange a visit. You’ll get to see the campus facilities and talk through any concerns.
  • College open days Come to an open day to talk to staff and students. Additional Learning Support (ALS) staff are around on College Open Days. Just come and chat, no appointments needed.
  • College transition events – An opportunity for some young people to spend extra days in college for a smooth transition. These take place during the academic year and over the summer holiday period. We offer these ‘keeping in touch’ activities to those who would benefit from an enhanced transition.

If you’re a parent or carer of someone with additional learner needs (ALN) it’s normal to feel a bit worried. Let us know about disabilities or additional learning needs when you fill in the College application form so our Additional Learner Support (ALS) Team can support and reassure you.
