Apprenticeships

With an apprenticeship you can build your skills, gain a qualification and start your career right away.

Earn while you learn with an apprenticeship at Coleg y Cymoedd.

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed while you train alongside experienced colleagues. You’ll also get time off to study for the qualifications you need in your job at one of Coleg y Cymoedd’s four well-equipped campuses.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid job where you’ll gain a qualification and job-specific skills while you work.

Alongside your job, you’ll spend between one and three days a week studying at Coleg y Cymoedd. Our experienced tutors are on hand on-hand to help you get a nationally recognised qualification for your chosen career.

You’ll benefit from unbeatable facilities and quality of teaching at one of our four South Wales campuses. Our apprenticeship staff are all time-served experts in their field. Who better to help you learn your trade?

How to get an apprenticeship

Follow these four steps to get started with your apprenticeship.

1. Find an employer

Search for vacancies on Career Wales’ Apprenticeship Matching Service.
Already employed? We can offer advice and guidance to you and your employer and help get you set up on an apprenticeship programme.

 2. Get in touch with us

Contact Coleg y Cymoedd’s Work Based Learning Team. They can tell you more about available courses and help you begin your application.

3. The agreement

Your employer and the college will agree an apprenticeship programme of learning with you.

4. Enrolment

Time to get stuck in. The Apprenticeship Team will enrol you onto your apprenticeship training programme and you’re all set to start your new career.

Who can do an apprenticeship?

These are the entry requirements for all apprenticeship programmes:

  • At least 16 years old when the apprenticeship starts. If you’re not 16 yet you can still apply, as long as you’ll have turned 16 by the time your apprenticeship starts.
  • Employed in the area you want to work in.
  • You will also need to undertake an initial assessment in numeracy, literacy and digital literacy.

Each apprenticeship has its own entry requirements. Check details for the individual schemes above to find out more.

Extra support with your apprenticeship

While you study for your apprenticeship, you can also top up vital maths and literacy qualifications you missed out on at school through Essential Skills Wales.

At Cymoedd we offer learning support services for extra help with literacy and numeracy. We can also support apprentices with disabilities, sensory impairments and additional needs.

Cymoedd Xtra offers clubs, societies and activities that fit around your work and studies and you can even enjoy our on-campus restaurants, salons and sports facilities.

What qualifications do you get from an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship qualifications range from a level two which is equivalent to GCSEs, up to level six which is a degree equivalent. That means you can start an apprenticeship at the level that’s right for you, based on your previous qualifications.

Here at Cymoedd you can study alongside your work for a level two, three, four or five qualification.

Level 2

A level two apprenticeship takes around 12-18 months. It’s equivalent to five GCSEs. If you don’t already have your Maths and English GCSEs you can top up with functional skills training as part of your apprenticeship.

Level 3

A level three apprenticeship usually takes around two years to complete. It’s the equivalent to two A levels.

Level 4

This is equivalent to a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or the first year of a degree.

Level 5

A level five apprenticeship is a qualification that’s equivalent to a foundation degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND).
