Coleg y Cymoedd’s Health and Social Care team has been working with colleagues in Technology Enhanced Learning to develop two new virtual reality (VR) immersive training experiences, designed to support apprentices studying children’s health and safety and dementia care.
The idea grew out of a Taith-funded visit to Denmark, where staff saw how VR was being used to support health and social care training. Inspired by what they experienced, the team began exploring how similar approaches could enhance learning for Cymoedd apprentices.
These immersive experiences place learners in realistic care settings, giving them the chance to explore environments, identify risks and build confidence in a safe, controlled way. The aim is to help apprentices better understand real-life situations they may face in their roles before encountering them in practice.
Alongside existing simulations and apps, these tailored experiences will be piloted later this year, with the potential to make learning more interactive, engaging and confidence-building for apprentices.
Health and Social Care Lecturer, Rebecca Bennett, said: “Apprentices learn best when they can experience situations for themselves. These immersive virtual experiences give learners a feel for real-life scenarios and help make learning more meaningful.”
The pilot marks a further step in the college’s approach to using digital innovation to support vocational learning and strengthen apprenticeship provision. Find out more about apprenticeships at Coleg y Cymoedd.
