Costume Construction Foundation Degree and and Art & Design Students Showcase Laura Ashley Creations During Royal Visit

Students from Coleg y Cymoedd’s Costume Construction Foundation Degree and Level 3 Art & Design had a memorable opportunity this week as they presented their work to King Charles III and Queen Camilla during the Royal visit to Cyfarthfa Castle, Merthyr Tydfil.

The students have been researching Laura Ashley’s work as part of the centenary celebrations marking 100 years since her birth.

Speaking about the project, one learner said: “She took a big risk in building her business and in moving her family back to Wales. She chased a dream and took it somewhere huge. It’s very inspirational.”

Another noted the importance of Ashley’s impact on women in fashion: “She pushed women forward in the industry and created work that represented her identity as a Welsh woman. That matters. It’s what more women should feel confident doing.”

Students explored Ashley’s patterns, construction methods and love of natural imagery: “I was really interested in the floral designs and the meaning behind them. Her interest in botany comes through clearly.

“I enjoyed making my own pattern and screen printing – it felt very true to Laura Ashley’s process.”

The Costume Construction Foundation Degree is delivered locally through Coleg y Cymoedd in partnership with the University of South Wales, allowing learners to work in smaller groups while completing the first stage of a university degree close to home.

Speaking about the experience, programme staff, Esme Cowan and Callan Matthews, highlighted the importance of opportunities that allow students to engage directly with cultural heritage and creative industry settings. They noted that projects like this encourage learners to develop both their technical skills and confidence in presenting their work to diverse audiences.

“Working on this project has given our learners a meaningful insight into the realities of costume production – from research and pattern cutting to final garment construction. To be able to share that work during a Royal visit is something very special, and we’re incredibly proud of the professionalism and creativity they’ve shown throughout.”

Their garments will continue to feature in ongoing centenary events celebrating Laura Ashley’s legacy in Wales and beyond.
