Teaming up with Beicio Cymru to inspire the next generation of cycling leaders

At Coleg Y Cymoedd, we’re looking forward to a monumental event in our local community next year – The Tour De France Grande Départ 2027 is passing by our campuses!

The world-famous cycling race is set to open in the UK next July, with the third stage travelling through the South Wales region, passing key checkpoints very close to home (think Treorchy, Rhondda, Aberdare, Nelson, Hengoed, and Caerphilly!)

It might be early, but we’re already gearing up for the occasion with some cycling-themed events and initiatives for our learners.

Activator Awards for cycling champions

Our Technology Enhanced Learning and Engagement team has launched an innovative partnership alongside Beicio Cymru, to give young people the opportunity to become the next generation of cycling leaders through the Activator Award coaching qualification.

Designed to be a practical introduction to cycling leadership, this inspiring session is making cycling more accessible in our community. No prior experience was required, but by taking part in the scheme, learners could build the skills, confidence, and knowledge to become cycling champions. After completing the course, the young Activators can now confidently create safe, inclusive and enjoyable cycling activities to engage other riders.

Throughout October, four courses were delivered across our four campuses, enabling 32 young people to be trained as cycling champions ahead of the Tour De France 2027.

Through a series of fun and interactive games, the learners gained practical experience on the bikes and built confidence in leading activities for other beginner riders. The hands-on sessions were supported by theory, including communication, safety, teamwork, and leadership skills, helping young people promote cycling among their peers.

Maddy, a member of the Cymoedd Xtra team based at the Rhondda Campus, highlighted the impact of the practical elements of the course and the support provided by the Activator Award leaders, Mark and Cerith, saying:

“It was a really great experience for our learners and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Since having this session, our learners have become a lot more interested in bikes in general and have even asked to do a bike maintenance course, with the aim of donating old bikes to people who need them.”

The session inspired our learners to think about how they can use their new skills. Learners, Coley and Logan – both part of the Youth Shedz group – are now planning to incorporate their new skills and knowledge into a community challenge, as well as exploring other opportunities through Beicio Cymru.

The young Activators will play an important role in building excitement around cycling in our College and communities. Ahead of the Tour De France, they’ll be helping to lead cycling Festivas and other activities. But beyond all that, it also creates a pathway for future opportunities in volunteering, coaching and cycling leadership.

Inspiring talk from double Welsh gold cyclist Ioan Hepburn

Meanwhile, sports learners at Nantgarw campus also enjoyed a guest speaker talk from Welsh cycling star, Ioan Hepburn. At just 18 years old, Ioan is not only a double World champion and European champion, but he is also beginning a full-time GB Cycling Olympic Programme in November.

From nutrition to training, Ioan shared his motivational and inspiring cycling journey with our ambitious sports learners.

After the talk, learners got into the competitive spirit with the opportunity to take part in a cycling challenge. Beicio Cymru ran a track cycling talent spotting session for learners using the College Wattbikes. They competed to see who could create the highest power output on a Wattbike.

Pedalling towards 2027 and beyond

This term is just the first lap of our exciting journey alongside Beicio Cymru. As the countdown to the Tour De France Grand Départ 2027 continues, we’ll be rolling out even more campus events, inspiring guest speakers, and talent-spotting sessions for learners.

Whether you want to develop your leadership skills, get involved in local community projects, or simply discover a new passion for riding, there’s a place for you. Keep an eye out for upcoming opportunities across all four campuses – get involved, get active, and let’s ride into 2027 together!
