About you and background
My name is Jess Prosser, I live in RCT, I am 21 years of age. I am currently working in Asda Tonypandy. I was schooled via a Home Learning Scheme via the computer which I did on my own and only had “virtual” interaction. After agreeing to meet with Gail Pritchard the college course tutor, I found her very supportive, encourgaging and after getting her reassurance of what would be involved I decided to give it a go. A decision I have not regretted as it gave me excellent grounding for my current job role within a large workforce.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
Foundation Studies in Catering.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The college offered a course that would get me back into using basic skills and communicating with other people of my age group.
Why did you choose to study this course?
The course was recommended to me by a Welfare Officer that it would be a good course to integrate me back into society as I hadn’t attended main stream school for a few years.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The College is local and it has a wide variety of courses for people of all abilities.
What are you doing now that you have left?
After leaving the college I started to look for a job and in April 2014 I had an interview with Asda’s Tonypandy and got a job as a seasonal check-out operative. I have since got a permanent job with Asda and just finished a course to enable me to develop further within the company.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
If I hadn’t attended the Foundation course I would not have had the confidence to find a job, to go through an interview and deal with customers on a daily basis. Before starting the course I was unable to leave the house on my own and found it difficult to interact with people.
The support of the tutor was amazing and its thanks to her and her staff that I have got this far. At the end of the academic year 2011 I received the Foundation Studies in Catering Award. At the presentation evening along with two other students received a Highly Commended for Academice Achievement Award which really boosted my confidence.
The course helped me realise that I wasn’t on my own and there were other young people who had issues and it made me feel normal and not as vunerable any more. It also helped me realise the importance of not only receiving support but being supportive to others. I regularly helped the tutors and students with IT issues and it helped me to work as part of a team which is essential in my current job role.
How will studying impact on your life?
It has given me better career opportunities and the confidence to achieve my goals in life that before the course would not have been possible.
Would you recommend this college and this course to others?
I would definitely recommend the college and the course to others, the course gave me the confidence to get my life back on track and interaction with students that I hadn’t had in a few years.

“Jess has worked very hard to get her life back on track. Jess found it very difficult to attend college at the beginning but with determination and support she completed her course. I am very proud to see the progress she has made.”
