About you and background
My name is Jade Babbington, I am 23 and live in Caerphilly. I work as an Aircraft Engineer for GE Aviation.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I studied GCSE Italian in 2013-14 and Level 1 German in 2014-15.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I previously attended the college as part of my engineering apprenticeship scheme in 2011-2013. The campuses are in the local area and the staff are always dedicated to teaching and are invested in the learning of their students.
Why did you choose to study this course?
Having previously learnt French at school, I have learnt that learning languages opens so many doors for use when travelling and during your career. I find it important to keep challenging myself and to always continue to learn and gain new skills and experiences. In these instances, I wanted to gain a basic understanding of how to read a menu and order food in Italian ready for a trip to Rome and German for use during a work training course in Schweinfurt, Bavaria which also comes in quite handy coming from an engineering background.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The facilities available to students at the college are excellent and right on the doorstep! There is a huge range of courses available to study and there has been massive commitment from staff to support those who prefer to study in the evening part-time.
What do you intend to do next?
I’m currently studying a part-time Foundation Degree in Business Studies at the Nantgarw campus. Having access to Higher Education at a time suitable for me has been invaluable and is giving me valuable qualifications for future use in my career.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
Studying languages has helped me out of a few sticky situations! It’s enabled me to communicate with international visitors to my workplace and has given me the confidence to make new friends during the course and help new friends that are learning English online. It has made me far more efficient at learning other new languages and has made me more aware of how to communicate best with people.
How will studying impact on your life?
I have gained confidence not just from a communication perspective but it has helped me grow confident in my abilities and in challenging myself. I think it’s a massive achievement for me to be able to talk to people using a second (third or fourth) language, even if it is just a greeting.
Ultimately it improves my employment prospects, being part of a global company already means that studying these will enable me to choose from a wider variety of job options should the time come when I fancy a career change.
Would you recommend this college and this course to others?
Absolutely! I’m still coming back for more! I have nothing but the highest regard for the staff who have all been a tremendous help in supporting me and helping me to achieve these qualifications. They are fantastic!

Jade is an excellent student, and has done very well in her modern language qualifications. She has been a pleasure to teach, and I look forward to welcoming her back into the MFL fold once she’s completed her Business Studies Degree!
