Course Outline

This course provides a mixture of nationally recognised training, with the emphasis being placed on 'learning by doing', whereby academic work is reinforced through practical activities.

Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, Work-skills and appropriate Essential Skills.

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grades A*- E including Maths & English.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

What will I study?

You will study a number of NVQ, Performing Engineering Operations units at level 1. The NVQ units you may study include Electronic Assembly & Wiring, which specifies the competencies required to work from circuit & wiring diagrams and layout drawings, Electronic Systems, which involves servicing and fault-finding on circuits and systems.

You will also study relevant computer software packages and applications along with computer repair skills. In course assessment of practical assignments will be carried out.

For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales 'fits in' with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising.

The Work-skills portion of the Welsh Baccalaureate will include the best ways of searching for a job, applying for a job and preparing for an interview. These are all valid and necessary skills to make yourself competitive and attractive to future employers.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment for this course is by continuous evaluation of practical competencies along with formal written assignments and online external examinations.

Career Opportunities and Progression

On successful completion of this course you will have gained the skills you need to start or progress in careers such as: Computer Aided Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Electrical/Electronic Maintenance. On successful completion of the first year allows an education path to the VRQ level 3 electrical and electronic certificate. Other routes of progression include, the level 2 Diploma in Engineering or the level 2 VRQ Diploma in Engineering Technology. Successful completion of this course would also provide an ideal route into a Modern Apprenticeship programme.
