This course is designed for people who would like to enter a career in the sport and recreation industry.
At the Nantgarw campus there are three routes available on this course. Rugby, Football and General Sport.
Rugby – Entry to the rugby route is by invitation through the Cardiff Blues/Blues affiliated club.
Football – It is expected that players will be playing for a local team competitively
At the Ystrad Mynach campus you will study General sport. there are three routes available on this course. Rugby League, Female Football and General Sport.
You will require 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C including Maths and English/Welsh, or completion of a full vocational programme at Level 2 with overall pass grade. Level 2 programme must also include GCSE Maths & English/Welsh at grades A*-C or equivalent such as Level 2 ESW Communications and Application of Number.
You will be invited to attend an interview. During this interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.
What will I study?
As part of your course you will study a variety of topics such as the anatomy & physiology, training and fitness, assessing risk, fitness testing for sport and exercise, sports coaching, sports development and practical team sports. Specialist areas include: sports nutrition, sports injuries, rules/regulations and officiating, exercise, health and lifestyle, psychology for sports performance and instructing physical activity and exercise.
How will I be assessed?
To gain the Level 3 in Sport you must complete internal assessments in all units. Assessment will cover practical skills, oral questioning, assignment work and written questions. All units are assessed, graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
Career Opportunities and Progression
After successfully completing this course, you will be able to apply for courses in Higher Education. You could also apply for employment within the sector.
