Course Outline

BTEC Level 3 Certificate (leading to Diploma) is a qualification that gives learners the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in IT Systems and Systems Management.

Entry requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including ICT, preferably at grade B, or equivalent.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

What will I study?

The Certificate in IT (As) is comprised of three units: Unit 1: Communication and Employability skills for IT You will need to understand both the personal attributes valued by employers and the principles of communicating effectively whilst developing effective communication skills and addressing your own personal development needs. Working within the context of technologies such as social media, you will examine the necessities of such advancements alongside the many ways to make this a profitable venture in your future careers.

Unit 2: Computer Systems You will need to understand the components of computer systems and develop the skills needed to recommend appropriate systems for business purposes. You will be tasked with setting up and maintaining computer systems. The end of this unit will provide you with that rarest of knowledge – what’s inside a computer? Unit 30: Digital Graphics You will need to understand different types of digital graphics images and file formats and be able to create, edit, modify and manipulate digital images of various types and complexity. If you’re a creative individual, you can develop your digital skills here to vastly improve upon your currents skills base. If you’re not so creative, you can learn to make the computer work for you in a way that makes you look like a professional artist.

Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (A level equivalent): Unit 3: Information Systems You will need to understand business architecture and the factors that affect its performance and be able to design and create interactive models to help to further develop, analyse and process business information.

Unit 42: Spreadsheet Modelling You will develop complex spreadsheet models to support organisational activities such as running multi-million pound organisations, deciding on the products to be sold, the areas to move into and the monitoring of staff productivity. Unit 31: Computer Animation You will need to understand types of animation and their uses and develop skills required to design and implement different types of animation. To achieve the Diploma (A2), students must complete a further three units: Information Systems, Spreadsheet Modelling and Computer Animation.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via coursework. There are numerous ways in which you can evidence your achievements, these include written such as a report, practical such as taking apart a computer system and reassembling it and product-based such as submitting an animation. Learners are encouraged to work in the best possible way for them so assessment can be flexible to suit your strengths and weaknesses. The grades awarded for the certificate or diploma will range from Pass to Distinction.

Career Opportunities and Progression

The course is suitable for those studying in preparation for employment in the Information and Communication Technology sector, particularly in job roles where they will be expected to use ICT skills, liaise with users and carry out ICT support roles. These skills are valued by potential employees/students, and to some degree they are an expectation of all modern institutions, both academic and employment based. The qualification is also suitable for those wishing to gain a Level 3 qualification to support continuing study in Further or Higher Education.
