Course Outline

(Pathways in Media Make-Up or Prop Making)

This course introduces you to media make-up and small prop making for production. As a team player with creative talent, you will need the ability to interpret ideas and concepts from designers and directors. The course offers an insight into the professional world of a range of production media such as film and theatre with external industrial visits and work placement opportunities across a broad array of production companies. This course provides you with the experience to apply skills and knowledge in a professional environment, working within a team or independently.

Entry requirements

Applicants will typically require a minimum of 2 A levels at grade C or above, or a BTEC National Diploma/Certificate in a related subject area.

However, in the case of mature applicants, you will be expected to demonstrate an ability to complete the course successfully and will typically have appropriate professional experience and/or alternative qualifications.

What will I study?

This 2/3 year course aims to develop a wide range of skills in the chosen pathways of: 1. Media make-up and special effects. 2. Prop making.

Skills such as: • Make-up application for television and film. • Hair lace wig dressing and application. • Special effects and the use of prosthetics. • Airbrushing techniques. • A range of casting and moulding techniques. • Body casting. • Various model making processes. • Puppetry and prop costume.

Skills acquired will be developed over the 2/3 years together with work placements linked with industry to equip students with the necessary expertise to enter a career in the creative production arts in any of the two subject areas that they have chosen.

How will I be assessed?

The course is uniquely structured to be delivered by modules in blocks and encourages work placements when the opportunities occur, keeping communications through ‘e-learning’ systems. The first block covers your understanding of where you are at present and how you can follow a pathway into the creative production arts sector. On successful completion of this course you will be receive a University of South Wales award.
