The course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in a variety of Health and Social Care settings, including Nursing, Social Work and Teaching. You will attend college three days a week; the fourth day will be on work placement. Alongside the Level 3 Health & Social Care Diploma, you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is equivalent to one A Level.
On completion, you will leave the College with a qualification equivalent to an A Level, greatly enhancing your future opportunities. At Nantgarw - If you have previously attended a Welsh-medium secondary education, you will be given the option to follow 3 of the 9 units through the medium of Welsh. This will give you the opportunity to maintain and use your Welsh language skills and will help prepare you for working in a sector where there is an acknowledged shortage of Welsh speakers – a definite advantage for you in the workplace!
What Will I Learn?
The course is presented in units, and includes a variety of topics relevant ro studying and working in Health and Social Care.
For the Welsh Baccalaureate, you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales 'fits in' with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising.
You will require 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C, including English/Welsh, Maths/Numeracy, or completion of a Level 2 Childcare or Health & Social Care qualification or ESW Level 2 Application of Number and ESW Level 2 Communication. Plus satisfactory references. As well as producing a satisfactory DBS , applicants are required to provide evidence of their suitability to work in the care sector . All applicants will be provided with a “ Suitability for Care pro-forma “ that must be completed .
You must have satisfactory clearance with the Disclosure and Barring Service . You will be invited to attend an interview. During this interview you will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required. Applicants with appropriate experience, who do not necessarily meet the academic qualifications may be considered
You will experience a range of assessment methods which can include course work, examinations, role play activities, presentation and more.
