The Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating qualification has been developed for delivery in a training environment; this means that you do not need to be employed to study this qualification
It has been designed to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding so you can work in Painting and Decorating in the construction industry or progress onto construction management routes.
What Will I Learn?
You will carry out practical tasks and gain the underpinning knowledge in painting and decorating. The course includes, three core units and seven trade units.
Three core subject areas (underpinning knowledge): - Health, safety and welfare - Information, quantities and communication - Construction technology
The Learner will also learn seven key practical skills and knowledge in: - Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms - Prepare surfaces for protection and decoration - Apply coatings by brush and roller - Apply wall coverings to ceilings and walls - Produce advanced decorative finishes - Carry out specialist architectural feature work - Apply water-borne paint systems using airless equipment
You will also complete Essential Skills at level 2 in both Communications and Application of Number.
Successful completion of a Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.
You will be invited to attend an interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.
Learners will complete a range of theory and practical units. On completion of each theory unit, an online multiple choice theory exam will be undertaken. On completion of each practical unit, a practical assignment will be undertaken.

Purchase of steel toe capped boots, overalls and a course text book is required for this course. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
- The successful completion of this qualification will enable you to seek employment in the construction industry as an apprentice painter/decorator. You will be required to complete the Construction Site Safety - Health and Safety test which will then enable you to apply for the site safety card (CSCS card) required to work on a construction site. On achieving employment you can then undertake - Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing – Painting and Decorating – Decorative Finishing to complete the Foundation Modern Apprenticeship framework. This NVQ qualification requests the learner to demonstrate, in a real workplace environment, that you are competent against a set of performance statements. You are assessed by an occupationally competent and qualified assessor whose job is to work with you and help you through your programme of learning.

Those working in this unit group apply paint, varnish, wallpaper and other protective and decorative materials to interior and exterior walls and surfaces, paint designs on wood, glass, metal, plastics and other materials, and stain, wax and french polish wood surfaces by hand.
There are no formal academic entry requirements, though GCSEs/S grades are advantageous. Entry is typically through an apprenticeship or traineeship approved by ConstructionSkills leading to an NVQ/SVQ in General Construction at Level 3.
