Course Information
This is a one year full-time course (currently 18 hrs./week) which comprises of a BTEC subsidiary diploma in engineering, a national vocational qualification, (NVQ) in performing engineering operations.
What Will I Learn?
Level 3 BTEC 60 Credit Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering This course is the equivalent to 1 A level (UCAS equivalent points are 40-140). Unit 1: Health and safety in the engineering workplace Unit 4: Mathematics for engineering technicians Unit 6: Electrical and electronic principles Unit 35: Principles and applications of electronic devices and circuits Unit 53: Electronic testing and measurement Unit 59: Microprocessor systems and Applications
Units of a Level 2 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations Unit 036: Assembling and testing electronic circuits Unit 032: Producing engineering drawings using a CAD system
Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at grades A*- C which must include English/Welsh, Science and Maths/Numeracy, or a Level 2 qualification with the appropriate selection and grades of units. You may also be required to pass an entry test.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish if any support is required.
Assessment
You will be assessed in different ways e.g. In-course assignment, project work, practical work and written assignments.

Career Progression
- A further years study is the usual progression, obtaining a Diploma in engineering and further NVQ units. It is also possible to obtain an apprenticeship at this stage as the qualification obtained is part of the apprenticeship framework. Most students proceed to a second year which gives better apprenticeship and higher education opportunities
