About you and background
Abi Markey, 27 years old from Tonypandy
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I studied Level 2 Beauty Therapy at the Rhondda campus, with Course Tutor – Gemma Treharne. On completion of this course I progressed to Level 3 Spa and Customer care at the Nantgarw campus.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
After studying A Levels at school, I was unsure what I wanted to do. I attended an Open day at the college and after speaking to the Course Tutor, Gemma Treharne - I enrolled on the Level 2 Beauty course.
Why did you choose to study this course?
I chose the Level 2 Beauty course as it provided me with an insight into the Beauty sector and there were various progression routes available, should I wish to pursue a career in this field. The Spa and Customer Care course provided further opportunities for me to gain employment in a fast growing industry and I felt the more treatments I could deliver, the more opportunities would be open to me.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The college offers a range of courses, which allows you to progress from Level 1 through to H.E., in a very friendly and supportive environment.
What do you intend to do next/what are you doing now that you have left?
On completion of the courses at Coleg y Cymoedd I worked for some time at the Vale Spa, however I decided I preferred doing nails and chatting to the clients. I was fortunate to secure employment at Nailsinc in Debenhams and House of Fraser; where I worked for 3 years.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
Following my employment at Nailsinc., I ventured in to Marketing and worked for a firm whilst studying my CIM qualification - unfortunately I soon realised this was not a career for me. However, the Marketing qualification and the qualifications I achieved whilst at the college enabled me to set up my own business – focussing on the nail treatments and skills I had acquired, including customer care.
How will studying impact on your life?
The experience and skills gained at the college gave me the confidence to set up Nailedit Beauty in 2017, which is based in a little summer house at the back of my home. The number of regular clients grew and this became my full time job. I have also been shortlisted as a Finalist at the Welsh Hair & Beauty Awards 2020, taking place later this year.
Would you recommend this college and this course to others?
I would definitely recommend studying at Coleg y Cymoedd. The staff are so supportive and have a wealth of experience from working within the industry; the skills and confidence you gain from them is excellent. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’- as in June, Nailedit will be celebrating its 3rd birthday!!
