Overview

This qualification is aimed at practicing electricians who wants to gain the knowledge and skills needed to install, commission, and hand over small-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in line with current industry standards and MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) requirements.

What will I learn?

  • Principles of solar PV technology, system components, and operation
  • Site assessment, system design, and layout considerations
  • Installation techniques for mounting, wiring, and integrating PV systems
  • Commissioning procedures, system testing, fault finding, and handover
  • Health, safety, and regulatory requirement, including BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Grid-Connected Solar PV
  • Integration with battery storage and grid connection issues

Funding eligibility criteria

  • Aged 19+
  • Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

  • Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts)
  • Self-employed
  • Full-time carer
  • Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

  • Learners must be qualified electricians (level 3) or have equivalent experience
  • A working knowledge of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) is essential
  • Experience in inspection, testing, and certification of electrical installations is strongly recommended

Assessment

  • Online or written knowledge assessment
  • Practical Installation, testing, and commissioning exercise
  • Completion of system design and handover documentation

Career progression

  • Enables registration with MCS-approved certification bodies as a PV installer
  • Can lead to further qualifications in renewable energy (e.g. battery storage, EV Charging, Retrofit)
  • Expands opportunities in sustainable energy and low-carbon electrical systems
  • Supports employment in green energy installation, consultancy, or maintenance
