Overview

This level 3 course is designed for electricians and installers who want to gain the knowledge and practical skills required to design, install, and maintain solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The course is mapped to National Occupational Standards (NOS), ensuring it aligns with industry best practice and supports compliance with MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) requirements.

What will I learn?

Principles of solar PV technology and system components
Site assessment, design, and layout of PV systems
Electrical connection, commissioning, and testing of solar PV installations
Health and safety considerations, including working at height
Regulatory requirements, standards, and documentation for PV systems
Maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance optimisation
Integration with battery storage and grid connection awareness

Funding eligibility criteria

Aged 19+
Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts)
Self-employed
Full-time carer
Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

18th Edition (BS7671) AND
NVQ 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent OR
Electricians Gold Card

Assessment

Combination of theory assessment and practical evaluation. Completion of installation-related documentation. On-course assessments mapped to NOS requirements.

Career progression

Work as a qualified solar PV installer
Pathway to MCS certification for companies
Further training in battery storage, EV charging, or other low-carbon technologies
Enhanced employability in the renewable energy and retrofit sectors
