Term 1: Carpentry & Joinery.
This is a practical course in basic woodworking - which involves bench work and provides a good introduction to the basic skills, knowledge and training in carpentry. As part of your course you will carry out the following carpentry skills: The correct use of hand tools, Introduction to portable power machines and Basic timber joints and fixings e.g. mortice and tennon, bridle, dovetail housing, double mortice and tennons and slot dovetail and finish.
Term 2: Painting & Decorating.
This is a practical based course which demonstrates the right procedure from the preparation of a job to the finishing of a job: Understand painting tools and equipment, Site preparation, Removal of dust and also Priming of metal surfaces, Glazing, hanging paper to both ceiling and walls, Applying oil based paints to a range of surfaces and cleaning tools, equipment and work areas.
Term 3: Brickwork & Plastering
Brickwork:
This practical course will give hands on experience and an introduction to Brickwork Skills and will help you to develop Brickwork Skills, You will learn about brickwork joints such as Quoin and Stretcher Bond and develop Block-work Skills. You will also learn finishing and pointing, use of hand tools and techniques and gain a knowledge and understanding of health & safety.
Plastering:
This practical course will give you a good introduction to the basic skills and knowledge for those wishing to plan Plastering projects at home. It highlights the different materials a plasterer is expected to work with, techniques and the different conditions to work in.
Entry to the course is by interview. You will need to purchase your own safety boots.
The qualification is achieved by completing a range of practical tasks and projects and the production of portfolio of related evidence which is externally verified by City & Guilds. There are no examinations with this qualification.
At the end of this course you will have gained a good understanding of a number of construction trades. If desired, from this course you will be more informed to choose which trade you like to pursue further.
Purchase of steel toe capped boots, overalls and a course text book is required for this course. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
