Learners from the BA (Hons) Costume Construction degree at Coleg y Cymoedd recently took part in Living Canvas: It’s Reigning Men! at National Museum Cardiff.
Inspired by portraits from the museum’s collection, students recreated historical garments worn by figures in the paintings following months of research and costume construction.
The finished pieces were presented beside the original artworks before a catwalk and judging session led by costume designer Ray Holman, whose credits include Rivals, Broadchurch, Fleabag and Doctor Who.
Grace Bath was named catwalk winner for her interpretation of A Quarrel by the Le Nain Brothers.

“It’s been such an enjoyable project from start to finish. Bringing A Quarrel to life through costume – from the initial research and pattern drafting through to working with the final fabrics – has been an amazing experience.
“The techniques I’ve learnt on the course, especially dyeing and breakdown, really helped push my costume further.
“Showcasing our work at the National Museum Cardiff and talking about the process behind it was such a proud moment, and it meant a lot to be recognised by Ray Holman. It’s definitely been one of my favourite parts of the course so far.”
When presenting the award, Holman said: “It takes real bravery for students and models to bring their work into a public setting like this. It’s a true celebration of costume, backed by a serious depth of research. The connection between concept and final outcome is beautifully realised, especially in Grace’s piece.”
The BA (Hons) Costume Construction degree, awarded by the University of South Wales, develops specialist skills in historical research, pattern cutting, costume construction and surface embellishment.
