Overview

Cert-ain certified ACS CCN1 (Core Domestic Gas Safety – NG) assessment covering the fundamental safety competences required for work on domestic natural gas installations and appliances. Successful completion is the core prerequisite for appliance assessments (e.g. CENWAT1, CKR1, HTR1, DAH1, MET1) and supports Gas Safe registration (scheme rules apply).

What will I learn?

  • Gas safety legislation & standards: roles, responsibilities, documentation
  • Gas emergencies: reporting, making safe, CO awareness/monitoring
  • Combustion fundamentals & ventilation requirements
  • Flues & chimneys: selection, siting, testing, spillage checks, flue integrity
  • Pipework & fittings: materials, installation standards, tightness testing, let-by, purging
  • Pressure/flow: standing & working pressure, regulators, governors, ECVs, emergency control
  • Meters: location, bonding/earthing principles (awareness), meter installation checks
  • Appliances (core safety aspects): burner pressure/gas rate (principles), flame supervision & safety devices, manufacturers instructions
  • Unsafe situations: identifying ID/AR/NS, warning notices, disconnection & documentation
  • Customer handover & record keeping

Funding eligibility criteria

  • Aged 19+
  • Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

  • Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts), earning under £34,303
  • Self-employed, earning under £34,303
  • Full-time carer, earning under £34,303
  • Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

Current or within-window CCN1 (per scheme rules)

Assessment

  • Theory: ACS multi-choice/short answers
  • Practical: Observed tasks on approved rigs – tightness testing/let-by, purging, pressure/flow checks, flue/ventilation verification, documentation and unsafe situation procedures
  • Professional discussion/oral questioning where required

Career progression

  • Appliance assessments: CENWAT1 (boilers & water heaters), CKR1 (cookers), HTR1 (fires & space heaters), DAH1 (warm air), MET1 (meters)
  • LPG changeover (CCLP1) where applicable
  • Supervisory/QS roles; manufacturer specialist courses; energy efficiency/heat pumps/solar thermal

Course dates will be discussed directly with the training provider upon successful completion of funding application. Any course dates arranged with the training provider prior to funding being secured may not be honoured – Course dates will only be confirmed once funding has been approved.
