Overview

CompTIA A+ is a globally recognised entry-level IT certification that validates hands-on problem-solving skills and the ability to support core technologies like security, networking, and virtualization, making it a trusted credential for launching IT careers and securing technical support roles.

What will I learn?

  • Troubleshoot and resolve common hardware, software, and network issues
  • Install, configure, and maintain operating systems including Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile OS
  • Support and secure devices in hybrid work environments
  • Understand and apply basic cybersecurity principles
  • Manage and support end-user devices, cloud0based applications, and virtualization technologies
  • Demonstrate professional communication and customer service skills in IT support roles

  • Aged 19+
  • Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

  • Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts),
  • Self-employed,
  • Full-time carer,
  • Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

There are no formal prerequisites for taking the CompTIA A+ certification, making it accessible to beginners. However, it is recommended that candidates have 9-12 months of hands-on experience in the lab or field, or equivalent training, to better prepare for the two required exams (Core 1 and Core 2).

If learners do not have this, it is recommended they start with CompTIA Tech+. Basic computer literacy and familiarity with hardware and software concepts are also helpful.

Assessment

Core 1 exam:
Closed book multiple choice style exam lasting 90mins. Pass mark is 675 (on a scale of 900)

Core 2 exam:
Closed book multiple choice style exam lasting 90mins. Pass mark is 700 (on a scale of 900)

Career progression

After earning CompTIA A+, professionals typically begin in roles like IT support or help desk technician. With experience and further certifications such as Network+ or Security+, they can progress into network administration, cybersecurity, or cloud support roles, eventually advancing to positions like systems administrator, cybersecurity analyst, or IT manager.

Course dates will be discussed directly with the training provider upon successful completion of funding application. Any course dates arranged with the training provider prior to funding being secured may not be honoured – Course dates will only be confirmed once funding has been approved.
