Overview

The OFTEC OFT21-504D qualification is aimed at heating professionals involved in the design and specification of air source and ground source heat pump systems. This course provides the knowledge and skills required to design efficient, compliant, and correctly sized heat pump systems in line with current industry standards, including MCS requirements, Part L of the Building Regulations, and BS EN standards.

What will I learn?

Principles of low-temperature heat pump system design
Site and property assessment for heat loss and system suitability
Heat emitter selection (radiators, underfloor heating, etc.)
Heat pump sizing and efficiency calculations (SCOP, SPF, etc.)
Integration with existing systems and hybrid solutions
Regulatory frameworks, including Building Regulations and MCS
Design documentation and customer handover requirements

Funding eligibility criteria

Aged 19+
Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts)
Self-employed
Full-time carer
Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

Learners should have experience in heating system design or installation.

Assessment

Written assessments (multiple-choice and/or short-answer). Design tasks involving calculations and system schematics. Submission of design documentation aligned with regulatory and industry standards.

Career progression

Progress to roles in heat pump system specification, design consultancy, or retrofit coordination
Meet the design competency requirements for MCS certification
Expand into wider areas of low-carbon building design and compliance
