Overview

This OFTEC-accredited course is aimed at qualified heating and plumbing professionals who want to gain the skills and certification to install, commission, and service ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems. The course meets the training standards required for compliance with MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) and other relevant regulations. It equips learners with the theoretical understanding and practical competence needed for safe and efficient GSHP installation and maintenance.

What will I learn?

  • Principles of ground source heat pump operation and system types
  • Ground loop design considerations (horizontal and vertical systems)
  • System sizing, heat loss calculations, and performance optimisation
  • Installation methods and integration with existing heating systems
  • Commissioning procedures and system testing
  • Servicing, fault-finding, and ongoing maintenance requirements
  • Regulatory standards, health and safety, and environmental considerations

Funding eligibility criteria

  • Aged 19+
  • Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

  • Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts)
  • Self-employed
  • Full-time carer
  • Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

Plumbing or heating qualification level 2/3 or several years experience in plumbing/heating industry AND Unvented Hot Water Systems (G3) and Water Regulations.

Assessment

Written assessments to demonstrate understanding of GSHP principles and regulations. Practical assessments covering installation, commissioning, and servicing tasks. Completion of associated documentation and compliance records.

Career progression

  • Become a qualified Ground Source Heat Pump installer eligible for MCS registration
  • Enhance career prospects in the renewables and low-carbon heating sector
  • Progress into roles involving system design, hybrid heating solutions, or heat network integration

Course dates will be discussed directly with the training provider upon successful completion of funding application. Any course dates arranged with the training provider prior to funding being secured may not be honoured – Course dates will only be confirmed once funding has been approved.
