This comprehensive course equips learners with the practical knowledge and confidence to plan, conduct, report and follow up on internal audits of an Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with ISO 14001:2015. This course aligns with ISO 19011 auditing guidelines and is ideal for anyone seeking to support continual improvement and environmental compliance within their organisation. Successful learners will receive an ISEP certificate and gain points toward ISEP Environmental Auditor registration.

Entry requirements

There are no formal prerequisites. This course is suitable for:

  • New or aspiring environmental auditors
  • Individuals responsible for developing or maintaining an EMS
  • Managers integrating environmental priorities into business operations
  • Existing quality, health & safety, or other management system auditors expanding into ISO 14001
  • IEMA/ISEP members looking to enhance their EMS auditing capability

Assessment

Assessment is by continuous evaluation and a 1 hour exam on the final day which combines written answers and multiple choice questions.

  • Progress to the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course

This internationally recognised and professionally certified course equips learners with the skills and confidence to lead environmental management system (EMS) audits in line with ISO 14001. It is certified by ISEP, CQI and IRCA and meets the training requirements for those seeking to become registered EMS auditors. The course is suitable for anyone involved in conducting, managing, or leading EMS audits.

  • Principles and purpose of an environmental management system (EMS)
  • Key ISO 14001:2015 clauses and their application in audit scenarios
  • Planning, conducting, reporting, and following up on environmental audits
  • Roles and responsibilities of the lead auditor

Entry requirements

  • Prior knowledge of ISO 14001 and environmental management principles is required
  • Ideally, learners will have completed an ISO 14001 Internal Auditor or Foundation course
  • A good standard of English is necessary due to the technical and written assessment elements

Assessment

Learners are assessed through a combination of continuous assessment during the course and an online exam after the event. The course also satisfies the training requirements to become an IRCA EMS Lead Auditor. Delegates will receive an ISEP Lead Environmental Auditor certificate and a CQI & IRCA ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certificate.

Career progression

  • Eligible to apply for Auditor/Lead Auditor registration with CQI and IRCA
  • Able to lead internal, supplier, and third-party EMS audits
  • Valuable for roles such as Environmental Manager, Sustainability Lead, or Compliance Auditor
  • Supports career development in consultancy, certification bodies, or corporate auditing roles
