Overview

The RTITB Counterbalance Lift Truck is suitable for learners with little or no prior experience.

What will I learn?

  • Health & safety legislation and operator responsibilities (e.g. HSW Act, PUWER, LOLER)
  • Types of counterbalance trucks and their applications
  • Principles of stability, balance, and load centre
  • Rated capacity and data plate understanding
  • Causes of instability and overturning
  • Pre-use inspection checks and defect reporting
  • Familiarisation with controls, instruments, and warning devices
  • Safe starting, stopping, steering and parking
  • Manoeuvring in open and confined spaces
  • Load assessment and safe handling techniques
  • Picking up, carrying, stacking, and de-stacking loads
  • Stacking at ground, medium, and high levels (as applicable)
  • Working on ramps, gradients, and uneven surfaces
  • Loading and unloading vehicles safely
  • Pedestrian awareness and workplace hazards
  • Fuel / battery safety (LPG, diesel, electric)
  • Shutdown and end-of-shift procedures
  • Theory assessment
  • Practical driving and load-handling assessment

Funding eligibility criteria

  • Aged 19+
  • Living in Wales

Plus, one of the following:

  • Employed (inc. agency & zero hour contracts), earning under £34,303
  • Self-employed, earning under £34,303
  • Full-time carer, earning under £34,303
  • Prisoner on day release

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. The course is suitable for those with little or no prior experience operating a Counterbalance Lift Truck.

Assessment

A practical/theory test based on the criteria covered during the course.

Counterbalance lift trucks are widely used in the following industries: Warehousing and logistics, Manufacturing, Construction supply yards, Ports and freight depots, Retail distribution centers.

Course dates will be discussed directly with the training provider upon successful completion of funding application. Any course dates arranged with the training provider prior to funding being secured may not be honoured – Course dates will only be confirmed once funding has been approved.
