Chemistry is a key subject for many degree courses in science, such as medical, veterinary or dental sciences, biochemistry or chemistry. It requires analytical powers and academic rigour, and is a good foundation for careers in law, accountancy and economics where such qualities are valued.d.

What Will I Learn?

The first year is the AS course and covers: Atomic Structure, Chemical Reactions, Bonding, Bonding & Structure, the Periodic Table, the Chemistry of Carbon & Basic Organic Chemistry as well as Chemical Energy.

In the second (A2) year you will learn more about: Organic Chemistry, Rates of Reaction, pH and Equilibrium, Chemical Energy and Entropy as well as Transition metals.

Entry Requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including Maths at grade C or above and Double Award Science at grade BB or above, or grade B in GCSE Chemistry (Higher Tier).

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Career Progression

Many learners apply to and are offered places at university to study courses such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Dentistry and Medicine or even Engineering degrees. Learners may go into employment or move onto an apprenticeship.
