Coleg y Cymoedd has always been a place that fosters both academic growth and a strong sense of community. A recent experience shared by the Pearce family highlights just how much the college means to its learners and their families.
“Today, I had the privilege of taking my son to enrol at Coleg y Cymoedd, Ystrad Mynach,” said proud parent, Shaun Pearce.
“We were warmly greeted by the staff and learners, who were incredibly helpful. I even had the unexpected pleasure of bumping into one of my old lecturers—a familiar face from over 20 years ago when I was a learner there myself. The place has changed so much since then, and it was truly lovely to see how fantastic it looks now.”
Now a Business Development Manager for Checks Direct in Cardiff, Shaun’s sense of nostalgia is equalled by his enthusiasm for what lies ahead. Reflecting on the eager anticipation of his son, Kaydan’s enrolment confirmation, he said: “When the staff member turned to my son and said, ‘you’re in’, his expression was unforgettable; his face lit up with joy. On the drive home, I caught a glimpse of him holding his new ID badge, whispering to himself, ‘I’m in.’ The joy on his face was unmistakable, a young man realising a dream. My heart swells with pride!”
This moment was significant for the whole family. From an early age, Kaydan had wanted to join the police force.
Inspired by Coleg y Cymoedd’s experienced Public Services staff, many of whom are military and police veterans, Kaydan felt confident that the Level 3 Uniformed Public Services course would help him realise his dream.
The Ystrad Mynach campus, which recently benefited from a £9 million investment in 2023, now features modern amenities that enhance the educational experience.
Kaydan will train at a new £2.5 million sports facility, supporting around 100 sport learners annually, including those in the Rugby League and Female Football academies.
Coleg y Cymoedd’s commitment to the community is evident in its efforts to help every learner achieve their career goals. With over 400 courses ranging from Care to Construction, there’s a path for everyone, and the Pearce family’s story highlights the impact it has in the local community.
As the new academic year starts, Coleg y Cymoedd continues to guide learners toward success. The college remains a key institution for education and community spirit in South Wales.
Coleg y Cymoedd is still accepting enrolments for September 2024. For more information on available courses, visit your local campus between 9am and 4pm on weekdays.
